History
The San Francisco Professional Food Society is one of the country's oldest organizations for professionals working in the food industry. In 2009, it celebrated its 30th anniversary. The group was formed in 1978 by a small group of food professionals in the back room of the San Francisco Williams-Sonoma store. The first president was Charles Gautreaux, manager of the store. Among its founding members were such food notables as Clark Wolf, John Philip Carroll, Marion Cunningham and Carlo Middione. Within 5 years, group membership had increased to 265.

Membership
Today, the Food Society has nearly 400 members drawn from all sectors of the professional food world. Among the members are food journalists, cookbook authors, chefs, food entrepreneurs, food educators, restaurateurs, vintners and sommeliers, marketers and executives for large food and wine companies and associations, photographers, designers, event planners, caterers, growers, producers, suppliers, food scientists, specialty food retailers and equipment purveyors.
